MEET THE CANDIDATES

PENNY BATEMAN

For those that do not know me, my name is Penny Bateman. I have decided to run for the Board primarily because I would like to see transparency and a sense of community restored to our association, and, because I can bring valuable board experience to the table. My husband Don and I have lived here since April of 2014. We have made many good friends on the Flying L, and we have had lots of serious fun over the years playing golf, visiting in back yards, meeting new residents at POA “socials”, and truly enjoying being part of a very special community.I was appointed to the Flying L POA Board of Directors in February of 2016, elected in November 2016, and served until I resigned in March of 2018 due to a perceived conflict of interest after I went to work for the new owners of the Flying L Ranch Resort. I have considerable knowledge of state statutes, our governing covenants and by-laws, and the overall operations of our association. Admittedly, I made mistakes during my tenure, but I learned from them. If elected, I promise to work hard and to encourage board members to take measures to accomplish the purposes I stated above for running. Additionally, I would like to see the board revisit guidelines that were established during my time on the board for covenant enforcement, mowing and tree maintenance, and road building and repairs. More than anything else, I promise to always have the best interest of our community at heart. You are welcome to contact me by email at PenEmaline@hotmail.com, or call my cell phone at 432.770.3003 if you have any comments or questions.

CAROLINE JAMES

Texas has been my home for most of my life and my family is here. I grew up in different parts of the state and prefer the small-town lifestyle. I retired from teaching at the elementary level after 36 years. Two critical traits that I believe are essential when working with children and adults are honesty and fairness. I have always wanted to live in the heart of the hill country. The Flying L Ranch became my home almost two years ago. It has truly become my “happy place.” There is an amazing sense of community here that has allowed me to make many new friends in a short time. I would love the opportunity to serve the people here in a positive way to the best of my ability. Thank you so much for your consideration.

DAN KNIGHT

Greetings to the board members of the Flying L POA, my name is Dan Knight, and I am interested in serving as a board member. My wife, Angie, and I relocated to the Flying L community a year ago from the Tomball area after 28 years of residence in the Heatherwood community. We have two daughters, the eldest is currently attending the Texas Lutheran University nursing program in New Braunfels, while our youngest is currently a Senior at theUniversity of Arkansas, Woo Pig! I attended Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, graduating in 1990 with a BBA in Finance. Following graduation, I embarked on a career in the real estate industry focusing on commercial real estate appraisal and consulting services. For the past 17 years, I have been a job manager for an appraisal firm representing approximately 30 client banks nationwide. I would like to get involved in our newly adopted community, meet our neighbors, make new friends and serve the Flying L to maintain its beauty, quality and unique character.

LARRY MARSH

I was raised on a farm in Kansas, where the family rules were: you won’t work, you don’t eat; too sick to go to school, too sick to play; and treat people the way you want to be treated. I’ve been married 55 years, and Sybil and I have three “kids,” seven “grandkids,” and nine “great-grands,” with two more on the way. After graduating from High School in l961, I joined the Navy, and retired in 1981 as a Chief Petty Officer/Driver. From 1981 until 1991, I worked in auto repair and construction. From 1991 to 2008, I worked for the Washington State Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer – we called it Adult Day Care. We lived in our motor home for eleven years, then bought our house here in 2020. I would like to be involved in the community by serving on the POA Board.

NANCY ROWTON

I'm interested in a position on our P.O.A board. My experience is in customer service. I worked for ten years as the owner-operator of a property management company, overseeing private residences. For fourteen years I worked as the customer service manager for the second largestfurniture company in the US. We have been coming to the Hill Country for the last 10 years and have been a resident of the Flying L Ranch for the last 3 1/2 years. I recently had the opportunity to help our community P.U.D with finding a $42k operations grant for our new generators. My hope is to be an asset for our ranch with my past experience in finance and in property management. I try to be a good listener and desire to support our P.O.A. Board members and my neighbors. I'm happy to answerany questions you may have. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

BRENDA ZUBIETA

I bring six years of experience of being on homeowners boards, five previously in another area and as a one year member on the Flying L POA board, I am Chairman of the Social Committee and organized the Spring and Fall garage sales, and now working closely with the Board and theResort for a Christmas Cheer Community Get-Together. I have owned my home in the Flying L for four years, happily retired, and enjoy volunteering my time with purpose. I retired from 33 years of ownership of a well-established restaurant. Controlling costs and adhering to budgets were essential to the success of my business. My experience includes knowing the value of good relationships with clients and vendors, utilizing my communication and public relation skills. In my business, giving back to the community was very important to me, participating in various fundraisers and I continue to do so in our local community and elsewhere. I enjoy visiting family in Ft. Worth, TX and Huntington Beach, CA. God, golf, and grandchildren are my loves. I have immensely enjoyed my wonderful neighbors, the Resort, and the entire community here at the Flying L. I'm happy to help and serve in any capacity and anyway I can. Thank you for your consideration.
